If more than one camera is to be used in most cases you will need one of the following
Switcher
A sequential switcher this unit switches between cameras at a set delay. The delay time can be adjusted by yourself. You can also overide the switching and select any one camera
Quad
Quads digitally split the screen in to 4 segmants. So up to 4 cameras can be recorded at once. Although you have a slight loss of picture quality and you cannot have just one picture on the screen at once during video playback. You are recording all the cameras all the time. For the best results using quads buy a real time unit
Multiplexers
Multiplexers usually can record from 4 to 16 cameras simultaneously. Although you have a slight loss of picture quality and there is a small time lapse between images all the cameras are recorded at the same time and you can call any one camera back
Simplex or Duplex multiplexers
The difference between a simplex and a duplex multiplexer is if you need to be able to view the system in multiscreen whilst recording you will need a duplex machine. A simplex machine will record all the cameras but will only allow you to watch one camera at any time whilst recording. Some simplex machines will allow you to view multiscreen in the playback mode.
A duplex machine allows you to view the system in multiscreen wether the system is recording or playing back.
